Murray’s Walk
Fancy a leisurely stroll through stunning native bush? You’ll love Murray’s Walk.
This delightful walk is on a raised boardwalk and takes you through a variety of vegetation from mānuka, fivefinger, karamū and koromiko growing at the forest edge. Then it’s into rewarewa, māhoe, tōwai, tawa, rimu and rātā and past a swampy area with kahikatea and other wetland plants. Nīkau and at least three species of tree ferns – ponga, mamaku and whekī – can be seen along the way.
The walk is a loop track, and is best combined with other adventures up the valley. It’s a great way to immerse in the forest without having to walk very far.
We suggest combining it with the Edwards Lookout Walk, which can be done in 30 – 60 minutes, but includes a climb.
If the day is hot and sunny, you might also want to head to Hoffman’s Pool afterwards for a swim – it’s one of the best swimming holes on the Kauaeranga River and is a favourite with locals and tourists alike.
If you fancy staying overnight, consider one of the many campsites in the area, like the Wainora Campsite, which is close to where this track starts.
Murray’s Walk Location
To reach Murray’s Walk, drive 15 minutes along Kauaeranga Valley Rd from Thames to the visitor centre, then another 15 minutes to the Wainora campsite. The track starts a few hundred metres from the campsite.
