Kahikatea Track
Kahikatea Track is a family-friendly loop walk that visits a replica kauri dam.
The loop starts at the DoC Visitor Centre car park and passes through lush native trees and boardwalked wetlands before reaching the one-third replica Kauri driving dam.
Kids love the dam replica, and the boardwalks, which is part of what makes it a fascinating walk for families. Plus there is an Aotearoa-based treasure hunt on this track – an information sheet is available from the Visitor Centre.
The path crosses the dam, then passes the old water race and exits into the top end of the Visitor Centre car park.
Kahikatea Track Location
To get to Kahikatea Track, drive 15 minutes along Kauaeranga Valley Rd from Thames to the visitor centre. This loop starts opposite the Visitor Centre main entrance.

Kahikatea – Kaa-HHiy-Kaa-TIY-aa
This is a native tree and is the tallest in New Zealand. The lower Kauaeranga Valley and Hauraki plains were once a great Kahikatea forest, before being logged in the 1870s for use in sailing ships masts. The great height of the trees made them perfect ship’s masts – much to the detriment of the forests.
