Hoffman’s Pool
Cool off with a classic Kauaeranga River summer swimming hole – Hoffman’s Pool is just one of many up and down the river, but one of the best.
Hoffman’s Pool is the perfect place to relax for a picnic and an afternoon swim. There is a high rock and deep fresh water pool is ideal for launching manus (jumping) into.
You can access this pool via the main carpark track, or via the Kauaeranga Nature Walk that also leads to this beautiful spot. Information panels along the way on this walk introduce you to the valley’s native trees and shrubs.
This is only one of many swimming holes up and down the Kauaeranga River. Hoffman’s is more public, and well-known much like Shag Stream swimming hole opposite the DoC HQ and Swing Bridge at the beginning of the valley. But get chatting to a local while you’re swimming, and they might reveal another location further down the river worth checking out.
Don’t forget to explore the other short walks and attractions in the area – like the Model Kauri Dam, or Murray’s Walk. These combine to make a perfect day trip. Or you can do a longer walk, like Moss Creek Track or the Cookson Kauri Walk, to a large kauri tree, and cool off at Hoffmans’ Pool afterwards.
Hoffman’s Pool Location
To get to Hoffmans Pool, drive 15 minutes along Kauaeranga Valley Rd from Thames to the visitor centre, then another 10 minutes to either of two carparks.
Info
10 minutes return.
