The Thames Coast with its sunsets and pōhutukawa lined coastal highway, is one of the world’s great road trip destinations. Freedom Camping in Thames is a great way to experience the real New Zealand, but there are some rules. Whether in a van or campervan, below is where you can park up for the night in the Thames area.

Rhodes Park By the sports field on the way into Thames, plenty of room. There are designated parks at the far of the carpark.

Danby Field Carpark Close to the centre of town. Backs onto an open field, is close to the Coastal Pathway, the new Porritt Park playground, toilets and the Goldfield Mall.

520 Mackay Street You can freedom camp at the Bowling club car park in the top left hand corner of this carpark. You’re right in the centre of town so there’s no green space or views but it is close to the shops and cafes.

Brown Street Close to greenspace at Victoria Park, the Coastal Pathway, bird hide, supermarket and Goldfields Mall. There are a handful of designated parks here, check for the signs. There are also public toilets a short walk north along with the School of Mines and historic Grahamstown attractions and shops.

Tararū Reserve Absolute beach front location with great sunsets. This is a prime spot located about five minutes north of Thames. Wind can pick up on an westerly. Some of the area is under restricted conditions, please check the signs onsite.

Waiomu Domain A great spot for sunsets, right on the ocean with a huge pōhutukawa taking centre stage. Located about twenty minutes north of Thames. Toilets, BBQ area, picnic tables and small playground. Cafe across the road. The Waiomu Kauri Grove can be walked to from there. Head to the far end on the domain to camp. Some of the area is under restricted conditions, please check the signs onsite.

Waikawau South Reserve A popular fishing village, Waikawau gives you perfect access to the sea, sunsets and more. The area is under restricted conditions, please check the signs onsite and Council bylaws online.

More info from TCDC Freedom camp only in a certified self-contained vehicle. Use proper toilet facilities such as public toilets and campervan dump stations. Look for our signs showing where freedom camping can take place. Restricted Conditions often refers to number of days stay and times you need to be vacated by. There is a waste dumping station located at the BP, on the corner of SH25 and Banks Street, Thames.
