Saint George’s Historic Church

Saint George’s Historic Church is a remnant of the Goldfields of the Coromandel Peninsula and stands as a witness to a time when Thames was bigger than Auckland and supplied the Auckland province with food.

Around 30,000 people were living and working in the borough at that time.

The church is an Anglican church billed as ‘a warm gathering of people, who are learning to know and hear God better. We meet weekly and would love to have you join us. We’ve been a focus for ministry and worship in the Anglican tradition in the Thames community for almost 150 years.’

Housed in a 19th-century wooden gothic building, St George’s is possibly the best wooden gothic church still in regular use as a parish church in New Zealand.

The first Saint Georges’ church was actually built on Rolleston Street, on land gifted by Chief Taipari, in 1865 but almost immediately proved too small. Within seven years, plans were made and executed to build the new Saint Georges which opened in 1872. The architecture of this much larger Saint George was based on the Gothic stone European churches. THat architecture has made the church a central feature of the town ever since, and it’s spire rises about the CBD and is visible by land and sea for miles around.

As was so often the case, the land for the church was generously gifted by Ngāti Maru chief Hotoreni Taipari.

No doubt prompted by the Covid Years, St George’s now offers live streaming of services to its community. You can jump on the live stream here. See the hours below for when to show up.
