by Dr Ayrton Hamilton

Gold was first discovered in Coromandel in 1852 but the Coromandel gold rush in the area did not take off until the discovery of gold in Thames in 1867 and had a great impact on the region and New Zealand. This presentation will use historical books and maps made by geologists of the time to examine the history and advancement of understanding of the Hauraki Goldfield.

Dr Ayrton Hamilton is a Geologist, with degrees in geology and environmental science, growing up on the Coromandel. He is a part time research fellow at the University of Auckland and Consultant, working on projects that include, astrobiology, carcinogenic minerals, and mineral deposits.
